Age

Minority Population Under 1 Year Became the Majority in 2010

The U.S. hit a major milestone between June 1, 2010 and July 1, 2010 with very little notice. The milestone that occurred was that for the first time in recorded U.S. history there was a greater minority population under the age of one (1) year than nonminority. According to the U.S. Census Bureau National Population Estimates, the percentage of infants under the age of one as of July 1, 2010 made up 50.01% of the total (see Table 1). The month prior, June 1, 2010, the percentage was 49.85%. This change directly reflects the statistic that the majority of births in the U.S. come from minority population groups.

The race/ethnicity percentage breakdown of the population under one (1) year on July 1, 2010 included:

  • Hispanic or Latino – 25.95%
  • Non-Hispanic White – 49.99%
  • Non-Hispanic Black or African American – 13.85%
  • Non-Hispanic Indian American and Alaska Native – .85%
  • Non-Hispanic Asian American – 4.37%
  • Non-Hispanic Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander – .19%
  • Non-Hispanic Two or More Races – 4.78%
